Social Media Officer

The Social Media Officer supports Surrey Goalball Club’s communication and brand image by managing its presence across social platforms in line with the club’s brand, values, and priorities. They plan, create, and publish accessible, engaging content that promotes sessions, events, and key messages, and respond to comments and enquiries in a timely and appropriate way. Working closely with the IT & Digital Lead and the Committee, they help to grow and maintain an active online community, highlight the impact of the club’s work, and use basic insights or analytics to inform future content and campaigns.

Social Media Officer

Main Duties
The Social Media Officer will:
• plan and post content that reflects Surrey Goalball Club's activities, values and priorities across agreed platforms (e.g. Instagram, X/Twitter, Bluesky, TikTok, YouTube, etc);
• create and publish accessible posts, images, and videos that promote sessions, events, news, and key messages;
• work with the Fundraising Officer and/or IT & Digital Team to plan larger-scale marketing campaigns;
• respond appropriately to comments and DMs received via social media, or advise the Welfare Officer for cases where it would be appropriate to do so;
• work with the IT & Digital Team and Committee to ensure branding, messaging, and information are consistent and up-to-date across platforms;
• ensure consent is received for photography and the publication of material, particularly with children and adults at risk, and following safeguarding best practice/policy for online content;
• actively keep an eye on current social media and internet trends, implementing them into content to keep SGC current, and;
• use basic insights or analytics to monitor engagement and help inform future social media content and campaigns.

As a volunteer at SGC, they will also:
• uphold and promote the 5 Key Values held by the club (i.e. Sustainability, Equality/Diversity/Inclusion, Wellbeing, Community, Collaboration);
• abide by club and Goalball UK policy, particularly both Codes of Conduct;
• communicate clearly and respectfully with all other volunteers, players, and other members, including providing advance notice (where possible) if they are unable to fulfil their duties;
• always offer a helping hand where needed around the club (such as providing sighted guidance if able, helping out at events, etc);
• participate in appropriate training and development opportunities (e.g. Safeguarding, First Aid, goalball-specific training, etc), and;
• take responsibility for personal conflicts of interest and declare, record and manage these appropriately.

Essential
The Social Media Officer will be someone who:
• has some knowledge of common social media platforms (e.g. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter/X, Bluesky, YouTube, etc)
• can communicate clearly and respectfully in writing, and represent the club in a friendly, values-led way;
• is organised and can keep social content running consistently;
• can create and post content (e.g. captions, images, videos);
• understands the importance of consent and safe online practice when posting photos or videos, and will follow club procedures;
• can respond appropriately to comments and messages, including knowing when to signpost or escalate to the Welfare Officer;
• can work collaboratively with the IT & Digital Team and Committee to keep messaging and key information consistent;
• is reliable, giving as much advance notice as possible if they can no longer do something or be somewhere they said they could, and;
• is open to relevant training and development (e.g. safeguarding, accessibility, graphic design tools).

Desirable
The ideal person for the role of Social Media Officer is someone who:
• is internet-savvy, with knowledge of current trends and audiences;
• has experience running social media accounts (preferably for a club, charity, business, or community group);
• has confidence planning posts ahead (even informally) and keeping a simple content plan;
• has experience creating graphical designs in platforms like Canva;
• is comfortable using basic insights/analytics to see what content works over time;
• has experience supporting campaigns such as event promotion, recruitment, or fundraising, and;
• has an interest in goalball and/or parasport, and is motivated by supporting inclusive community sport.
