Everyday Active Challenge October WoW
Join the Challenge!
Description
This autumn, we're inviting you, your friends, family and colleagues to join our Everyday Active Challenge - October WoW (Walking or Wheeling).
Studies have shown that sitting for long periods of time during the day is bad for our overall health and wellbeing, so throughout October we're encouraging everyone to walk more or wheel more, if you use a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Just 10 minutes of brisk walking or wheeling will get your heart pumping, improve your mood and lower the risk of serious health issues like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia and some cancers. A daily brisk walk or wheel will soon help you achieve the recommended 150 minutes of moderately intense physical activity every week (Chief Medical Officer).
There are lots of opportunities to Walk or Wheel...whether it's a brisk trek to and from work, a lunchtime scoot with colleagues, a weekend step-out with the family, a jaunt to the shops, a troop to and from school with the children, even a walk or wheel to the cinema or local pub! Together let's Walk or Wheel through October.
To take part, all you have to do is sign up to Kent's free Activity Tracker and start logging your walking and wheeling activities from 1 October 2024 - 31 October 2024.
To help get you started, why not visit Everyday Active's Walking pages. You'll find lots of advice on how to start walking, the benefits of walking, a handy Couch to Walking 5k plan plus lots of ideas on where to walk or wheel in Kent. You can also connect with Everyday Active on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date with the latest news and opportunities to walk over October.
Please note, only walking and wheeling activities will count towards this challenge. You can still log other activities (like swimming, football, running, cycling, yoga) onto your personal tracker dashboard but the challenge leaderboard will only show steps and points relating to walking and wheeling activities. If you are using a wheelchair or motorised scooter, please record your activity as 'self-propelled wheelchair' or 'walking' and add a distance travelled. SportSuite will use the distance travelled to calculate steps and points. If your wheelchair is attendant-controlled, we would encourage you to enter the distance for both the individual in the wheelchair and for the individual controlling the wheelchair (2 entries into the challenge).
All participants will be entered into a Challenge Prize Draw for store vouchers so everyone is in with a chance of being rewarded for their efforts.
