About Variety - Equipment grants for children
The right piece of equipment can mean the difference between playing outside with friends or watching from the sidelines; between being independent or relying on others for everything; between being able to do tasks safely and comfortably or struggling. It can help with pain management, muscle strength, communication, sensory challenges, self-esteem, social skills and confidence.
Variety can help by funding grants for a broad range of specialist equipment, including specialist sports equipment. Please note that applications for sports wheelchairs should be made via our wheelchair grants programme. There is no lower or upper limit on the level of grant which may be awarded, but most grants are for less than £5,000. Many requests are for sums under £1,000.
Children and young people are eligible for a grant if they meet the following criteria:
- They're aged 18 or under
- They have a recognised disability or long-term health condition
- They are permanently resident in the UK
Who can apply?
Applications can be made on behalf of individual children. These must be supported by a letter from an appropriately qualified medical professional, e.g. occupational therapist, physiotherapist or paediatrician. Applications can also be made from non-profit making groups and organisations working with children up to, and including, the physical age of 18 years. These include statutory bodies (schools and hospitals), hospices and small registered charities. These applications must also be supported by a letter from medical professional.
